One of my favorite interview questions. And it should be yours too.
Why? Any question about your achievements and accomplishments gives you a reason to shine a spotlight on your knowledge, skills and abilities, and position yourself as the best person for the job.
In other words, this interview question is one of the few where you can legitimately brag, brag, brag about all that you have to offer and girlfriend, don’t hold anything back.
Use the 3ME formula to develop a strategic answer that showcases your accomplishments but is also relevant to the employer or the position you are interviewing for.
The majority of job seekers make the mistake of simply sharing their accomplishments without making sure it’s relevant for the job.
Here’s what you do.
(1) First, take some time to analyze the job description in detail so you know the job responsibilities inside and out. With this information, you will be in a better position to pick which “achievements” would be most relevant for this interview question and which ones will have the greatest impact.
(2) Next, put together your list of achievements and accomplishments. Unlike the other job seekers, look through your list and determine which of these would be most relevant to the job you are interviewing for.
For example, if the job requires strong customer service skills, pick an accomplishment where you were recognized for your outstanding service when you dealt with a very difficult client.
Prepare an example ahead of time so you are ready to tell the story in an interesting and engaging way. This will give them evidence that backs up your claims and shows them what they can expect from you when they hire you.
(3) Finally, end with a statement that ties together your past achievement to your future performance once they hire you for the job. You do this to highlight that you can achieve a similar stellar performance for them.
You can do this by saying “when you hire me in this position, I will accomplish similar results for you by…”
Doing this when you answer this interview question will give them a preview of what they can expect from you. You see, you have achieved these results in your previous companies and now you are promising to do the same for them.
